In the intricate web of the UK energy market, the Capacity Market Auction stands as a crucial mechanism ensuring the stability and reliability of electricity supply, particularly during peak demand periods. For companies like Conrad Energy, navigating this landscape requires a deep understanding of the auction dynamics, its implications, and the broader trends shaping the energy sector.

The recent T-1 Capacity Market Auction for the 2024/25 delivery year, which cleared on February 20th, unveiled insights into the evolving energy landscape. With eight intense rounds, the auction settled at a price of £35.79/kW/year, awarding capacity agreements totalling 7,640MW. The lion’s share of these agreements went to gas-fired and nuclear generation, reflecting their dominance in the UK’s energy mix, with 39% (2,944MW) and 36% (2,767MW) respectively. Conrad Energy successfully bid 8 assets in the auction, one gas, one solar and six battery storage sites.

So, what’s noteworthy about the recent auction?

  • The procurement target for this auction was set at 7.7GW, reflecting a 2GW increase from the previous year amidst concerns of possible under-delivery.
  • The increasing role of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the energy equation. BESS secured 655MW of capacity contracts, underscoring their pivotal role in driving the transition towards zero-carbon electricity.
  • Solar and wind secured approximately 120MW (derated) of contracts, though renewables still constitute a small portion of awarded contracts due to high de-rating factors and trade-offs with CfD contracts.
  • All nuclear plants that participated in the auction secured contracts, highlighting their continued role in the energy mix.
  • Demand Side Response emerged victorious, securing 745MW of contracts, marking an 84% increase from last year.

The Capacity Market Auction is not merely a transactional event but a window into the future of energy in the UK. It underscores the delicate balance between traditional and emerging technologies, sustainability, and the resilience of the energy infrastructure. For Conrad Energy and other industry stakeholders, staying abreast of these dynamics is essential to navigate the complexities of the energy market and drive towards a more sustainable future.
