Despite some challenges like economic incentives that ignore environmental costs, biodiversity data gaps, financial barriers, inconsistent policies, competitiveness concerns, and limited public awareness and engagement, we remain hopeful for the future. Success story
Thriving ecosystems: the Larport Solar Farm site story
At our Larport Solar Farm site, we are proud to have enhanced endangered species protection, achieve a 132% Biodiversity Net Gain, and saved >9,000 tonnes of CO2 annually through renewable energy generation.
Backdrop
Our 44MWp solar farm in Herefordshire, with 77,000 panels over 125 acres, was built with biodiversity at its heart. Consultation revealed a chance to boost the rare black poplar population, now ~7,000 in Britain. DNA sampling found a unique black poplar species in Dormington/Checkley. With Dormington near our site, we had the chance to strengthen this local strain.
Initiatives implemented
We planted 10 native black poplars, increasing the county’s population by 12%. These pairs of trees were placed by the river to encourage cross-pollination. We also created 40 hectares of wildflower grassland by infilling hedgerows with a curated seed mix and planted 3 types of grasses to support bees year-round. Additionally, we installed and maintained 8km of hedges, planted native trees, and set up hibernacula, bat, and bird boxes.
